Great Oakley War Memorial
The Parish Council is very pleased to report that The Memorial was restored in time for Remembrance Sunday.A larger than usual congregation joined for the service, to reflect on those who gave their lives for the freedom we enjoy today.
The newly fitted panels with re-engraved names can now be seen very clearly. This was a real boon for the ‘Roll of Honour’ readers on the day. With the continuing conflicts in the Middle East the Memorial serves as a constant reminder of the human cost and suffering caused by war and let’s hope we can look forward to more peaceful pursuits in future. The memorial has cost over £3,500 to refurbish and funds have come from a variety of sources including; government grants, private donations, Fun Day proceeds and Oakley Magna FC. We would like to thank Saul Hunnibal for his assistance with the stonemason and getting the work carried out.
Money has also been approved for a bench to be situated near to the memorial which will help folks waiting for the bus or who would just like to rest and contemplate in the centre of the village!
